The U.S. Department of Defense has added Alibaba, Baidu, BYD, and other major Chinese companies to a list of firms it says are linked to the Chinese military. China has strongly opposed the move, calling it baseless and warning that it will retaliate.

On June 8, the US Defense Department updated a list, adding Chinese companies such as Alibaba, Baidu and BYD, determining that they are linked to China's military.

The list already contains 188 companies, spanning the internet, new-energy vehicles and many other fields. The US side claims these companies are tied to China's military-civil fusion strategy.

Being added to the list does not amount to formal sanctions, but starting June 30, the US Defense Department may not procure products or services from these companies. Moreover, firms' reputation, investor confidence and supply-chain cooperation could all be affected as a result.

In response, many Chinese firms call the designation groundless and voice firm opposition. China's Commerce Ministry pointed out that the US disregards the consensus the two heads of state reached earlier in Beijing, continually over-broadening the concept of national security and unreasonably suppressing Chinese companies, urging the US to immediately revoke the measures or China will resolutely retaliate.

Previously, some Chinese companies left the list through legal channels. This contest over national security is unlikely to come to a close anytime soon.
