It's Skype weekend again!

If you don't have Skype, go get it.

If you do have Skype, let it run over this weekend and you never know, some of your class mates might find you and say hello!

Sounds cool. Maybe I find the time this weekend. Sorry for my ignorance, but is there a "conference address" or something like that or do you build up the connections one-by-one? And is there a defined time slot?

Thanks to Skype, i "travelled" to Australia and Denmark on the same day. Great chatting with Auntie Sue and Lunetta, I had to turn off my computer speakers though, they caused an echo feedback effect. Anyone want to practice their Chinese, try Skype-ing me. I usually can afford a few minutes a day, especially to 'lianxi zhongwen'

The time slot is from after work on Friday to bed-time Sunday, your time. Here the weekend started 4 hours ago, and some people will still be doing a Sunday after I get to work on Monday. That way we're all bound to sync somewhere, even if it's only a few hours with each continent. Read the discussion on the forum for more details. Pick up a few people's skype names there. Nothing's formally organised, just hunt and chat, and know that this weekend your chances of finding each other online and at a compatible time are vastly higher than normal, because we're all leaving our skype running throughout the weekend. Find us all in the forum discussion, then exchange contacts, and say a quick hello, English is fine, and that's all you have to do. For now anyway.

Hope you have a good chat this weekend. I was hoping to join in this month, but I will be in the middle of nowhere Nebraska helping my father-in-law work the family Christmas tree farm. I will try the December meet-up. Cheers

AuntySue, Thank you very much for introducing me to Skype and helping me to get set up. It was a marvelous experience and I enjoyed talking to you (and your parrot Taffy) very much. The sound was so clear that it was like being in the same room with you. I look forward to more conversations with you and other ChinesePod and SpanishPod subscribers. I echo here the first message sent over the telegraph many many years ago..."What hath God wrought?" and I encourage anyone who hasn't yet tried Skype to download it and give it a try. I understand that ChinesePod is working on a "usergroup" plan for collaboration among subscribers at different skill levels. I think that Skype would be a nice addition to this plan. The only thing that one needs is a computer, the Skype program (which is free for Internet point to point use) and a cheap microphone (five to ten dollars). This medium has the potential to draw the community together in an amazing way. Now if we could only find a program that could produce really cheap air fares :)

If anyone would want to chat, I am probably home studying for a Chinese test this Monday. Also, if you plan to come to San Francisco, I can give you some good tips. (like don't expect to eat local crab - a recent oil spill has caused havoc with nature). skype: robert_hsiang

henning, It was wonderful to chat with you today. Like you said, "Why haven't we done this before?". Well, I think that what we were waiting for was the push by AuntySue. I hope to chat with you again soon. Please tell your wonderful wife that I wish she could send some of her fabulous cooking to me over the Internet. You made me hungry by just talking about her special Lotus root dish :)

CP also uses Skype (or SkypeOut to reach regular cell/landline phones) for the practice plan. Live voice and text chat features is a great combination. Even the video links work pretty well and the price is right.

The Skype video isn't really part of the practice plan, but it came in useful a couple times when I was unsuccessfully trying to describe an object and a second of video cleared everything up.

Hey, Bob, I had a blast. And also had a great chat with Sue as well. I won't be online after this this weekend, but really look forward to more chats with you and others.

I still need about 2 hours - the birthday party yesterday was wilder than expected ;) Bob, it was great talking to you yesterday. Too bad that I did not have more time.
