Bazza,
Those 汉字 don't seem to be numbers, what are they exactly? Is the combination a word or phrase of some sort?
Should we be concerned for Jenny's safety now that after two years of rejection you're looking into locking devices? ;)

This font might do the trick:
http://www.font.com.cn/downinfo/8.html
Or this one: http://www.font.com.cn/downinfo/1648.html
And check this for a funky font:

I think I'll have to find a proper calligraphy style font so I can learn to read them.

Very cool lock, Bazza. Was this your Christmas gift?
And the "gang sign"... I guess all or most people of China are in one gang, then. That's the kind of sign they invariable make when taking pictures. They teach little kids how to do it. I haven't figured out why this is so important to them...

This lock isn't very old I don't think. In working out the characters on it, I've noticed they're pretty much identical to a cursive font that I have, so I think it probably been computer etched and they're also simplified characters so it can't be from before 1950.

Bazza, believe your last post was for John's Christmas song post, but just thought I'd share in your frustration as in 2003 I had bought (or maybe a friend gave it to me, but bought some for others later)a CD at a store in Tianjin with all Christmas songs in Chinese, and took it to the States and played it for my family, but they didn't care for it much even though I loved it.

I tried forcing those Chinese christmas songs on my family and after a while they wanted to go back to the boring English ones. hehe

RJBerki,
that's so true. Anytime I say anything in Chinese in front of my sister she ignores me or walks out of the room. Since I work for Expedia I meet many people from foreign countries at work. Anytime I meet a Chinese person and they can understand my brand new, fresh off of Chinesepod, conversational mandarin skills I get very excited but have no one to share my joy with. Believe me...my co-workers have heard me say "In china they...." and "the Chinese..." in abundance.

I had to jump in, those locks are so cool, I spotted quite a few of all sorts that didn't appear to be made yesterday in the Old Antique Production factory down the block. I had a serious problem with luggage weight or my bags would have been packed with them!

No I wasn't sure excuter, and it was hard to read the writing, it was very cursive.

Kerou- the trouble with being fascinated by all things Chinese is that it doesnt go over so well with people that are not so fascinated. I now catch myself wanting to say "you know in China they"..... or "the Chinese"....... and I stop myself. Thats why cpod is a good place to be.

It would be hard to crack though, it took me a while and I had the handwritten password. ;)

you've just reminded me of my obsession with Chinese everything....I've started using chopsticks and eating in Chinese dishes, anything that say's "made in China" on it has somehow become sacred to me (no matter how many I can get for a dollar).....I even bought an antique fan once just because I thought the writing on it might be hanzi (that was at least 8 years ago though, so I still didn't have the guts to actually try learning chinese).....
I don't think I can let my mind rest until I get to China.

hehe, the peace gang of chinesepod...peace up (on a TV documentary I saw last year they did show the handsign wich means "Bloods up", but I think that the peace gang you create will be a better and more friendly one) ;-)

Sue,
Obviously you have never been to LA. Gang signs are an intricate system of secret hand signals used by street gangs to communicate at a distance. Whenever you see these guys on tv or the news, they take every opportunity to "flash" signs indicating which group they support or which group they oppose. Think Bloods and Crips, etc. Hope that helps.

Bazza - I believe combination is indeed the correct expression regardless of the fact that the combination is a combination of symbols or pictures rather than numbers. numbers are simply symbols that are easier to remember. (unless you are over "24".) Actually there is one like this in the DaVinci code,.... dui?
How old is this thing supposed to be? Are we talking more or less than 100 US dollars? Do you even have a hamster? :-)

oh no. Not another one. Hey maybe you can paste astroboy next to Bazza. Then he will be safe and only he will know who it really is.
sorry. Hey Baz I really like that lock. What is the actual size? Is this bike lock size or hamster cage size?
