confusion over these words

In the dictionary it just says 科学 Scientist . So is it incorrect to say 科学家。
Is 数学家 a term exculsively used for mathematician ? or is it interchangable with 科学家？

生物学家 (biologist)
More generally all could be considered 科学家 (scientist).
核科学家 (nuclear scientist)
社会科学家 (social scientist)
... etc.
