meishi/meishir/dian/dianr

can someone tell me, when you add the r on the end of such words as meishi/meishir  and dian/dianr the main reason. xie xie 谢谢.

my understading is that the r...儿化 [erhua or retroflex final] does nothing to change the meaning but merely represents a northern chinese [esp associated with Beijing] accent

Its usage is approximately proportional to distance from a dongbei cab driver multiplied by blood alcohol content.

They will put it on a bunch of stuff, but more likely, if it is a "small" thing (noun).
