March 22, 2008, 03:34 PM posted in General DiscussionFor us newbie folk, here is a site where you can download some free Chinese flashcards in PDF which can than be printed out. They cover some basic categories like animals, countries, vegetables etc.
Printable PDF Mandarin Flashcards
This has been mentioned in a few places on ChinesePod but if you are also looking for a free flashcard program take a look at ZDT (http://zdt.sourceforge.net/) which comes with some default word lists as well as the ability to add new ones. It's nice that it has word lists for some of the more popular textbooks (Integrated Chinese, New Practical Chinese Reader) as well all the vocabulary contained in the Pimsleur series. This a program only for viewing flashcards on your computer - you can't print the flashcards out.

March 22, 2008, 09:04 PMYea thanks Boran. Iused to make my own lists for pimsleur and still would like to find transcripts. Another useful flashcard site that includes integrated chinese and HSK studies is: http://www.yellowbridge.com/chinese/flashcards.php it is free but for a small fee you can add many more features. -RJ

March 22, 2008, 10:14 PMThanks all for these programs. I've used ProVoc (for Mac) in the past, and really like it. It also has a cool dashboard widget which is great for quickly testing your vocabulary. On a similar note, does anyone know of a flashcard program that is good for Palm OS? I'm familiar with a few that have existing vocabulary lists. Ideally, I'd love if there were one that could import (a CSV file) directly from our Vocabulary Manager. To be able to study CPod vocabulary on the go, using a nice flashcard interface on the PDA, would be great!

March 23, 2008, 01:58 AMrsmith91, Your welcome. ZDT is great, especially for the price! RJBerki, I stumbled upon transcripts to the Pimsleur series a month or so ago. I found them here. Calkins, I have a Palm Treo myself and the only flashcard program I found was PlecoDict which is not free. It does have the ability to import word lists from a text file - words in the text file are separated by a carriage return/new line not a comma though.

Hi Boran,
Just wondering, if you still have these transcripts (especially for 2 and 3) and if you could possibly email them to stylestatement 123 at gmail dot com. I will really appreciate your help.

chinese1230,
If I remember correctly these transcripts turned out to be very incomplete and ultimately a disappointment to me. I did a search today and found some sites that at one time had the transcripts, but it seems that due to complaints of copy right infrigement from Pimsleur, they were removed. Its a puzzle to me, becasue Pimsleur does not offer the transcripts for sale to my knowledge, and their availability would only make the CD's more valuable and would no doubt expand their use. Sorry I dont have a better answer for you.

March 22, 2008, 07:59 PMThat ZDt program is great! It has a huge list of words that you can search and add to your vocab lists (all with characters and pinyin), and there are three different options for the flashcard game. It also tracks how well you know each word, so that it tests you more frequently on the ones you don't know as well. Excellent - thanks for telling us Boran!
