A new series called Wild China started this week on BBC2, about China's wildlife.

I saw it yesterday on BBC HD (which is one of the few HD channels I get in Switzerland). It's beautifully filmed and really makes you want to go and explore those regions by yourself.

I thought it was fantastic. There was a documentary on BBC4 recently too called China Schools, I would advise anybody to watch it, very heartwarming. It also gives an insight into a young girls struggle with standard mandarin. The link below has it for 2 more days: http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/page/item/b00b6lqj.shtml?q=china&start=1&scope=iplayersearch&go=Find+Programmes&version_pid=b00b6lls

Another excellent episode tonight. The emphasis is on people's traditional interaction with wildlife. You want to find a hornets' nest because you love to eat the tasty larvae, but it's not easy in the thick forest. So, you fasten a grasshopper to the top of a pole and lift it into the canopy. You wait, watching carefully. Eventually, a hornet arrives and begins its butchery. Slowly, slowly, you lower the pole. You carefully tie a short fine thread around the distracted hornet. The thread has a white feather at the other end. When the hornet flies away you can easily follow it back to the nest. There, another pole with smoking leaves soon drives all the hornets away. You can climb the tree and bring down a nutritous, tasy meal (if you like that kind of thing, which you do, because you know what's good for you!). These films are made jointly by the BBC and CTV, so, hopefully, they'll soon be shown in China, too. Then around the world, perhaps.

A wonderful side of China that not even many Chinese know about.
