Here are some of my favorites Chinese sayings.

死马当活马治。
Treat a dead horse as if it's still alive. (cling to last hope)

瘦死的骆驼比马大。
Even a donky starved to death is bigger than a horse.
(Virture never grows old.)

Thank you Changye, you always know more than all I can find in my chinese dictionary.

Just one detail here, 骆驼 is a camel and then is bigger than a horse even when starving. A donkey would be smaller than a horse.

Hi kimiik,

Gee, I often see donkeys on the street here in a small city in China, and that is just the reason why I made such a stupid..........  hehe.

P/S. I even made a mistake in spelling the word "donkey" in the posting!

Don't worry, as a non-native speaker I'm quite flexible with spelling (especially mine).  ;o)

Hi everybody, interesting sayings ! Could someone maybe translate

睡得像个死猪一样

for me ? I would be really grateful, I kind of get the idea, but still....

睡得像个死猪一样

direct translation would be :

(she) can sleep like a dead pig

But a proper translation in english would be :

She's sleeping unashamed

Speaking of dead animals, here is another cultural difference :

[English] like a dead horse (don't feel anything)

[French] comme un cheval mort (very heavy)

[Chinese] 像死马 (do your best ... or something like that) may come from 死马当作活马医

... anyone to confirm ?

Hi guys,

How about "sleep like a log"? Btw, my chubby dog sleeps like a dead dog.

This scene comes from a bad Korean movie dubbed in chinese :

色即是空 2

Thank you, you two :) Changye, your dog doesn't look chubby on the picture ! I wonder how the expression 'like a dead pig' would be used to express 'not being afraid'...

I have no doubt that it's a very religious movie for propagating Buddhism in Korea.

Changye, The producers want you to watch this movie with your mind not your eyes.  ;o)

In my case, the spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.

Lets add some biblical touch here :

Romans 8:3, 律法既因肉体软弱、 有所不能行的、 神就差遣自己的儿子、 成为罪身的形状、 作了赎罪祭、 在肉体中定了罪案.

For the usage, I looked on Google what people can DO like dead pig except from sleeping (睡得像个死猪). Here is the answer :

得像个死猪 : sink like a dead pig ( to float without fear ? )

得像个死猪 : drink like a dead pig

得像个死猪 : pour (alcool) like a dead pig (?)

... That was disappointing, I expected to see much more verbs !
