If anyone is having problems playing the ogg files, I know that Audacity will play them.

eyux, if we're right with the transcripts above then Chinese for roundabout is 环岛.

Yeah, I uploaded them myself, I was going to link each filename above the individual files but after inserting about 10 links, I thought sod this and put them in a zip file. :)

Bazza, do you find, as I do, that on the Tom Tom itself the Chinese voices are "mixed" at a low level, and that you need to up the volume compared with the English voices?

@calkins, she might have done if I'd relied on just the Chinese voice.

@matt, haven't really noticed.

I think I need help with the remaining gaps now, I can't work them out.

This was a great exercise and fun. Here are my guesses:

ahead exit right/left 请走前方 右/左 车出口 驶出

leave motorway 请从前方路口驶路

mwexit right/left 请从前方路口 右/左 撤 驶路

sharp right/left turn: 请 上 右/左后 方转弯

u turn where possible: 请在 适当 的 路转掉头

I hope we are right about 驶 which I don't remember running into before; would it be a term used more in Taiwan?

Thanks sushan, any ideas on the remaining 3 with question marks?

Take ferry  清乘 轮渡

I have no idea what a roundabout is in English, but I think the word used is 沿, so:

cross roundabout 请 沿环岛

go around the roundabout 请 沿环岛 绕行

Good tip bazza and thanks for these audio's.Yeah,my computer extracted them in Windows Media player.Opening them in windows media player worked fine, but the trouble was it then wouldn't close and kept generating an error message.Couldn't open it in quicktime or another programme.Couldn't click on the file and choose audacity to open it either for some reason ,but if I opened audacity and then navigated to it ,it then worked fine.Don't know much about ogg files. When I was downloading them,it looked like it was coming from your own website! Thanks again.

Hmm, I tried to embed a video, but that didn't work. Anyway, if anyone wants to see Magic Roundabouts in action, you could do far worse than seeing our local one. Couldn't find a pic, so this will have to do. Evidently some people are keen on roundabouts.

aha - they are known as traffic circles on this side of the Atlantic. But are so confusing I understand that they have been outlawed in some provinces.     Thanks : )

Outlawed the roundabout?! But they are so much better than traffic lights!

As far as I know the roundabouts / traffic circles have been proven the superior concept several times in terms of accident rates - with statistic significance. Unfortunatelly due to space constraints you only rarly see them in Germany.

Roundabouts are great - they keep the traffic flowing and in light traffic you don't even need to stop.

Yes, they waste space, but in the UK we now have roundabouts that are just a one metre diameter white circle of paint. At night you can just drive straight over them.

I've seen them in China, so what's Chinese for roundabout? (Not in my dictionary.) It must include 圈 - quan1 - circle?

I saw two in succession in Berkeley, CA. We were so surprised, we drove all the way round them (I wasn't driving).

Sebire, the one in the picture I posted is in Swindon.

Here is a video of someone driving around it:

This is a roundabout, we have loads in the UK.

They're usually pretty easy to navigate, but in some cases they can be a little complex. lol
