May 18, 2009, 07:49 PManother hands-up here for another look at the audio levels please : these need to be tested in realistic conditions, e.g. an ipod on a commuter train.

December 12, 2008, 07:50 PMwhilst has got a specfic application, to introduce a continuous action for the purposes of contrast. e.g. Whilst King Zog claims that all peasants are happy in thir work, complaints to the Chancellor have being rising this year. It only sounds stuck up if it's substituted for "while" in a random way, no?

December 09, 2008, 04:25 PM> This is a good example of how pinyin rules do not necessarily follow English pronunciation rules.
Well quite, but why should they? Bear in mind that PinYin was designed, not for the convenience of English students, but for Chinese people to learn Mandarin.
>true that ChinesePod has made over US$1,000,000.00?
Who knows, but I would easily believe it if you said they had spent that much.

October 08, 2008, 04:31 PMbenbang cai? How come that means Shanghainese food? Is that absolutely what it always means, or is it relative, i.e. authentic cuisine of the present location?

October 03, 2008, 11:32 AMCongratulations and 加油 from me too. I think I first met Cpod at lesson 5 or so, and have listened to 500+ lessons since. Consequently I've whizzed from upper Newbie to lower Upper Intermediate (while doing old-school evening classes too). There's some things I know that the classes would never have taught me. Not only that, I feel what Chinese I do know is more natural and easy as a result. Best wishes for the next 1000!

April 17, 2010, 08:19 AMHeaps of reasons, all depending on local conditions. Because employers can buy in bulk and offer better value? If you were to "take the money" it would have to be taxed first? In the UK for example there is substantial (30+%) income tax, which nearly everyone pays, which pays for among other things, some free healthcare. Therefore it's tax-efficient for employers to offer their better paid staff all sorts of non-cash benefits, though these can themselves attract yet more taxation.
