The character “不” have several meanings in classical Chinese. One of them is "large", although it's a very old usage. Interestingly, "不" (pi1, not bu4) and "丕" (pi1) were sometimes used interchangeably to mean "large" more than two thousand years ago. Actually, both characters had the same shape in bronze inscriptions (金文).
