October 11, 2008, 04:30 PMThe character "贵" (gui4) is just a mystery for me, a Japanese guy, because its sound is rather different from that in Japanese, i.e. "ki".
The ancient sound of "贵" is "kiwoi" or somethng like that in China. And its modern Korean sound is "kui", which is similar to both Chinese "gui" and Japanese "ki".
So I guess the Chinese character "贵" was introduced to Japan by Korean people. The original sound "kiwoi" was probably "tempered" during the process of transfer.
