November 28, 2008, 10:34 PMI'm completely stuck here, can anyone help?
I want to say "these paints are used for throwing at people".
I am either having a complete mental block, or I just don't know the grammar. Maybe someone can give me a hint first?
So far I have 这些颜料, and for "throwing at people" I thought 向人 and 扔. Now, how on earth do I put this together into a meaningful sentence?!

Cool pic.I'm not sure if you saw it,but in case you didn't I posted a funny video from The Amazing Race where people were throwing paints at each other in India here. It's the second last entry currently.Looks like fun.I've played skirmish [also called paintball] a few times which is awesome fun.:)

Hi sebire,
Let me have a try.
这些颜料是用来扔在人们身上的。

November 29, 2008, 06:19 AM"颜" means "face" in Japanese, and this is the original meaning of the Chinese character. Exactly speaking, "颜" indicated a forehead in the past.
And therefore, "颜料" originally meant a kind of cosmetic, such as colored powders, and later the word obtained a broader meaning, i.e. paint.

November 29, 2008, 10:59 AM谢谢 Cassie! So 用来 means "be used for"?
If I didn't have the 是。。。的 pattern, would it sound weird? I don't really get how it works here. I was looking at examples, and some use it and some don't.
Stamps are used to send letters.
邮票是用来寄信的。
Keys are used to open and lock doors.
钥匙用来开门和锁门。
Candles are used to give light.
蜡烛用来照明。
This room is used to store food.
这个房间用来储存食物。
My grammar book confuses me with 是。。。的 patterns.
Changye, I was wondering about that, because I saw an example of 颜料 which was talking about make-up. I wonder if it is a common usage?

November 29, 2008, 01:21 PMHi sebire,
I don't think it's a common usage. "颜料" is only used in the sense of "paint" in modern Japanese. I guess the same holds for "颜料" in Chinese.

November 29, 2008, 12:59 AMYeah, I took this pic in India about a week before Holi, but missed it by a couple of days. If I had known before when Holi was, I would have changed my flight.
I've never been paintballing. I've seen the bruises!
