"女" (nv) and "如" (ru) had a similar pronunciation, but not the same, in ancient times, which consequently caused a big difference in modern sound.

Interestingly, both of them are transcribed as the same sound, "nyo", in Japanese, because the number of kinds of sounds was not enough to distinguish them in ancient Japanese. Japanese pronunciation system is more simple than that of Chinese.
