December 30, 2008, 12:28 PMthanks changye, you also find 佰 for 百 (bǎi) 100, and仟 for 万 (qiān) 1,000. I suppose 萬 is used for 万 (wàn) 10,000, i.e. the traditional form.

December 30, 2008, 12:46 PMHi goulniky,
They slipped my mind! As you thought, 萬 is the traditional form of 万. "佰" and "仟", which have a radical "人" (person), originally mean corps/a legion in ancient China. They contain a hundred (百) of soldiers and a thousand (千) of soldiers respectively.
