Thanks for the help and links. I live in Scotland and haven't been able to find actual books, but I found a website called www.mandarin.about.com, where you can print grids off as a Word document.

Where do you live? I bought a whole stack of them when I was in a grocery store in Taiwan; but don't know of any sources in North America.
There's some blank worsheets available from this site:

As well you can download worksheets there for each individual character broken down into stroke order.

You might like "Learning Chinese Characters from Ms. Zhang" (http://www.amazon.com/Learning-Chinese-Characters-Ms-Zhang/dp/7561912943). The price is pretty hefty in the US. It's the same in RMB in China - if I remember correctly.
Teach Yourself Beginner's Chinese Script (http://www.amazon.com/Teach-Yourself-Beginners-Chinese-Script/dp/0071419837) is quite nice, too. You get some explanation how characters work.
I am looking forward to Nintendo DS "My Chinese Coach" (http://www.amazon.com/My-Chinese-Coach-Nintendo-DS/dp/B001BZ691C) - although that's not really a book, is it??
