The shape of "父" in oracle bone scripts is "a hand with an axe (or something like that)". In ancient China, a father usually worked with an axe in the hand. So the character "斧" (父 + 斤 "axe") really makes sense. Incidentally, there is another 釜-related chengyu, 釜底抽薪 (completely remove the source of trouble).
