January 25, 2009, 06:48 AMHi calkins,
The character "游" basically connotes more "tour (= sightseeing)" than "travel", and "旅" connotes "trip and travel". And therefore, "旅游" (= 旅行游览) is usually used for sightseeing, and "旅行" has a broader meaning, a business trip included, than “旅游”.
The same goes for "游客" and "旅客". For the record, "旅行者" and "旅游者" are a little formal expressions of "旅客" and "游客" respectively. "旅游" is not used for "business trip", although Chinese goverment officials often go on a business trip just for sightseeing.
In this sense, I think that "旅客" is the most appropriate (and most frequently used) word for "traveler" in the sense of traveling home.

January 25, 2009, 07:53 AMHi changye,
Much thanks for the clarifications and additional etymologies!
As a non-native Chinese speaker, it's difficult to find the most applicable word when there are many similar choices.
If anyone sees that I'm using the wrong word in any of these posts, please don't hesitate to point them out. My feelings won't be hurt! And really, the only way to learn is when others correct our mistakes.
Thanks again changye.
