东盟十国高峰会在泰国召开
东南亚联盟十国高峰会27日在泰国华欣（HUA HIN）正式登场。这是东盟召开的第十四届高峰会议，会议将寻求办法来消除全球经济危机造成的后果，以保护东盟成员国的出口贸易。但与会十国昨天在预备会 议上已经签署六项经济协定，包括东盟货物贸易协定等，是未来东协走向经济共同体的重要基础。
东盟十国经济部长昨晚签署的协定，包括东盟货物贸易协定、保证协定、服务架构协定、以及东协广泛投资协定。
另外，东盟十国部长也签订了开业医生互相承认约定、开业牙医互相承认约定、以及会计服务架构互相承认约定。
东盟目前的十个成员国是：泰国、马来西亚、新加坡、菲律宾、文莱、越南、老挝、缅甸和柬埔寨。东盟国家预计在2015年以前形成东协经济共同体，促进货物、服务、投资与技术劳工的自由活动，这些签约内容都将成为经济共同体的基础。

Actually 北 (bei3) is the original character of 背 (bei4, turn one's back, betray). The shape of 北 consists of two persons turning back on each other, which later obtained other meaning "north", and interestingly the derivative meaning has replaced the original one. The same goes for 东 (east), 南 (south), and 西 (west).

Btw, I checked NATO (北大西洋公约组织) which shortcut is 北约 and Warsaw Pact (华沙条约组织) is 华约.

Here 东南亚联盟 is shorten as 东盟.
But what about 南亚区域合作联盟 （South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation）where there's no countries from the ASEAN. Could we still shorten 南亚区域合作联盟 as 南盟 ? (Answer here)
The usage of 背盟 is not a happy omen for Korea or Russia.
