Portable hard drives

Hi all.  I need to go out and buy one of those portable hard drives with a capacity of several hundred gigabytes.  Can anyone help me with some basic language I would need to make the transaction happen?  For example, how do you refer to portable hard drives in Mandarin?  How do you say gigabyte?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Steve,

Just found the Intermediate lesson "Buying a computer" here which might be a good place to start. It has hard drive as 硬盘 yìngpán.As for bartering the lesson on buying a plasma tv might also be of some use.Good luck.

ps I'm not sure if 便携式硬盘 would thus be the most common term for portable hard drive, but it did bring up 64,800 results in google images and the pics I looked at were of portable hard drives.

Hi steve

bababardwan is right about 硬盘 being hard drive (literally, hard disk.) And you would be understood if you said 便携式硬盘 。

But in my experience people just say 移动硬盘, mobile hard drive (remember China Mobile is 中国移动)。

Gigabyte is 千兆字节 qiānzhàozìjié.

You can get these custom-made at most electronics markets. You just tell them how many gigs you want and then pick out your cover. I don't know about prices these days-- any poddies with experience?

Good luck.

you can just say  'G' for gigabyte.

Hi, Steve

I happened to read your message about how to buy a portable hard drive in Beijing zhong1guan1cun1(中关村) electronic markets, which is near Peking University. I am a native Beijing person, and it is my pleasure to help you buy a portable hard drive.

Portable hard drive is also called mobile hard drive(活动硬盘huo2dong4ying4pan2) hooked up computer with a USB wire.

I personally argue that mobile hard drive is not the best solution to your storage of e-files, because you have early paid money   for the excessive capacity which will be used in the future, and the price for a portable hard drive is more expensive than a common hard drive. E-products usually have the trend of price downturn; so today you maybe spend more money on redundant capacity or function.

Perhaps, DVD-ROM recorder plus DVD discs is the inexpensive solution to increasing demand for storage. DVD discs are very cheap. It is up to you.

Gigabyte =千兆(qian1zhao4).We directly say “G” for Gigabyte. For example, 200 gigabyte is 200 g.

There might be a dialogue between you and salesman that I guess.
You: Do you sell mobile hard drives?
    Ni3men2  you3  huo2dong4  ying4pan2  ma?
Salesman: no.没有。But I may help you take one. Do you agree to it?

Y: O.K. I want a 200G one.
  Hao3ba, wo3  yao4  yi1ge4  200g de.
S: (He will make a phone call to the dealer who sell the product you want, and then he will ask if you accept his offer of price.)
600 yuan2, xing2 ma? 600 RMB O.K.?

Y: Give me your final price.
  Gei3ge  shi2zai4  de  jia4ge2.
  (shi2zai4  de= substantial)
   550 RMB, no more cheap.
Y: O.K. I take it. Wo3  yao4  yi1ge4.

After my examination of entry into postgraduate, I currently have nothing to do but learning English. If you do not mind, I can accompany you to purchase the e-product and practice my spoken English.
I will be pleasant to answer your next questions about Chinese language you meet. Email me.

I wish I would be one of your friends in Beijing.
