About 300 people at a Hong Kong hotel have been placed under quarantine after a guest there became China's first confirmed swine flu case.

The 25-year-old man, who is now in hospital after testing positive for the virus, had travelled from Mexico via Shanghai, Hong Kong's leader said.

上面的新闻有两个句子我不太明白, 两句都关于 "数"的语法.

"...生病人數則為1324."  Does anyone know how 则为 fits in?  The meaning of the sentence is obvious, but I can't really parse it.

"...數百萬學生將停課到5月6日."  Again, obviously a million students are out of school, but I don't quite understand why 数 is placed where it is.  I would write the sentence without it.

This article is written with traditional characters, but actually there are a lot of Chinese characters commonly used both in traditional and in simplified Chinese. The characters in red are only used in traditional Chinese, which accounts for about 25% of the total number of characters used in the article, and ones in black are commonly used.

Changye, that's a great idea.  Now it's educational.  I thought about doing that, but lack your erudition.

An interesting point is that, because this paper caters primarily to overseas Taiwanese/Hong Kongers/Macaoers/SE Asian Chinese, it flosses English place names; this avoids the problem of trying to figure out transliterations in different dialects.

The 则 is optional. Its meaning is similar to that of 就. It may be said that 则为 is a formal form of 就是.

数百万学生将停课到5月6日

The 数 in this phrase means "several", but not "number". So, 数百万 should be translated as "several million".
