While preparing for another HSK, I have found quite an interesting link which does help you revise your characters (don't forget to click on them). The 4000 characters are grouped by their frequency of appearance in Mandarin:) enjoy!

This is a good list. I have only recenlty begun learning characters, using a list of 2,000 words. I will bookmark the link you've suggested for future reference.

You mentioned you're preparing for the HSK. I have long thouht about one day taking this test, and since reading Mark's post http://chinesepod.com/community/conversations/post/4823#comment-119128 and now yours, I am inspired to think more seriously about it for early next year.

Hi bendidelaowai

Here is another helpful webpage about Chinese character frequency.

http://www.zein.se/patrick/3000char.html

I personally hate to see this kind of materials because they always make me realize that the number of Chinese characters I know is actually much smaller than I think.......

That's a truly useful and interesting site you've posted bendide, thank you very much. As for me, I can't imagine that I'd ever feel 'ready' to take the HSK, (good luck to you and anyone who does!), but I continue to dream of a time when I could indeed feel that I knew 4,000 characters, when I could recognize them without effort, and I'm going to use this site now to help me do it.
