大家 or 各位?

Hi everyone,

what is the difference between 大家 or 各位? My guess is 各位 is more formal. However, it seems both are used in a public speaking context.

For example, when the bridgegroom begins his speech at a wedding reception, which would be more appropriate?

大家好 or 各位好?

Thanks!

bingkk32, I believe I can at least partially answer your question.

You would use 各位 as a form of address such as in a speech, whereas 大家 more or less means everybody.  So, for example, you could say 大家都喜欢那本书, or everybody like this book; but you could not say, 各位都喜欢这本书。

Personally, for a wedding reception I would be inclined to use 各位.  大家 seems too informal, but I'm not too sure about that.

There is another usage of the word 各位.

各位贵宾,女士们,先生们,大家好!(or 你们好!).
