iPhone App

June 04, 2009, 02:09 AM posted in General DiscussionI was surprised to see a ChinesePod iPhone app today. I think this is a great step forward for ChinesePod and us users. I hate to sound picky but it seems that there are only a few flashcards for newbies. Perhaps this is going to be updated to include different levels?

June 04, 2009, 06:05 AMThanks John, after taking a look at the blog I played around with the app. It's really cool, I like the sample sentences, especially the "play" feature. Surprisingly the voice doesn't sound robotic either. This is a well designed app that I find really useful. Thanks!

June 04, 2009, 06:40 AMHi John,
I entered my login data, synced, resetted, synced again, but "Flashcards" is still a featureless empty page.

the Flashcards still don't work on my iPhone (dictionary is fine). Any tips on how to proceed?

I got it to work fine mate a week ago. From what you've written I can't see anything wrong so I'm not sure if I can help.Initially everything was there except the flashcards which I think I had to go into settings and upload separately.I did it over a wifi connection.Obviously you have flashcards on this site already? Other than that, can you uninstall the app and start from scratch again? I'm not sure if it requires the latest iPhone operating system or not.
I'll try installing the app on my desktop to go through the steps and see if I can spot a problem.

after deleting all vocab in my vocab base it started to work...

June 13, 2009, 10:32 AMAh,that's good to hear mate, though a shame you had to delete all your vocab.I actually did the same thing the other day,but not because my flashcards weren't working [qishi I think I did it just prior but only because none of them were tagged and I wanted to organise them into the different academic levels].I was just about to post that I think from memory the other thing was that it asks for your username but you actually have to enter your email address. The flashcards are great;I'm actually using them and they are large and easy to see and you can just double tap to reveal them and then flick to move on to the next one.For the next stage I'd love to see it either recognise when you're getting a particular character correct a threshold number of times or allow you to manually record that you felt you'd mastered that character. But I am very happy with it.The dictionary on the move has been invaluable too and would be even more so if I were to go to China.I'd love to hear whether there will ever be the possibility of downloading the audio over 3G.

June 13, 2009, 01:27 PMI have tried many flashcard apps and I think the usability of the chinesepod app is really great. For me the only drawback is that I find the vocabulary section on the website a little bit hard to use, so I don't know if I will use it a lot.

More information about the app is on the blog.
Actually, to take full advantage of the app, you need to sync your account with the app, which will let you review your saved vocabulary.
