Expat insurance/health insurance

July 03, 2009, 02:13 PM posted in General DiscussionI'm wondering if there are any poddies out there (particularly those living in China) with advice about health insurance for expats living in China long term? I have lived in China before for a time, but the insurer we used then went bust in the global financial meltdown. If you don't want to advertise a particular company would you mind sending me a PM?

Yes, but not necessarily just self-employed. Chinese employers generally offer quite limited insurance which covers minor treatment and would not cover an extended stay in hospital or, say, the necessity of surgery. The insurance offered would not cover repatriation to your home country. I am looking for something that covers more than minor treatment at a hospital (for which I do not need insurance anyway because it is so cheap.)

July 06, 2009, 09:52 AMHi bodawei
I use IMG. Thankfully, I have never had any incident that would require treatment. My plan was about $700 US for the year, which is a whole lot cheaper than it would be in the US (the socialist system beckons!)
It covers me for three months back in the States, as long as most of the year will be spent in China. The coverage is all quite good, in the hundreds of thousands of dollars range.
Send me an email if you want me to forward the plan info.

July 06, 2009, 09:54 AM@Bodawei, I can tell you this about my global (health) insurance / situation, but this might not be standard (different companies have different regulations):
My husband works for a large European (consumer) electronics company and most things are taken care of by their HR dept.
My insurance comp. is UK based and has "something" for expats. I can PM you the info. I'm quite happy about it and they provide good healthcare (well I can choose about anything I want / need and get it refunded), but I am not sure about what it costs, because I do not pay it directly myself, but they will be able to tell you this. Everything is taken care of by e-mail and until now I had no problems / complaints. Let me know if I can help you with something (else).

Thank you so much - if you could PM me the information that would be great. It is difficult sometimes to get good information on these things, and insurance companies, well.. :-(
@Pete
I will email you - sounds good ...
