John：Christmas Party..not just any Christmas party,we're talking about an Office Party.
Jenny:在办公室的
John:。。and not just any office
Jenny:是CPod,ChinesePod办公室
John:right,so this is the ChinesePod Office party in dialogue form
Jenny:嗯
John: ..you might hear a few voices you recognise
Jenny:对
John:I sure do
Jenny:呵呵，是的，而且我们还有以为圣诞老人
John:ah so Santa,alright..the word for Santa one more time
Jenny:圣诞老人,圣诞老人
John：ok,so Santa his name comes up in this dialogue even though he himself is not in the dialogue

John：and ah it's in a special context so see if you can pick out why the word "Santa" is in here..what are they talking about?

John:..alright ,so let's take a look at this dialogue.Umm,we start off with Connie
Jenny:嗯，对的
John:..working on the Christmas tree,right?
Jenny:对，可是她需要你帮忙
John:yeah,so she needs some help..we won't say exactly why,but it has something to do with height difference I think
Jenny:呵呵，对
John:So what does she need help with?
Jenny:哦，她要你把五角星放到树顶上。。把五角星放到树顶上
John:ok,so we have the 把 pattern here
Jenny:嗯
John:so you 把 something,and then you do something with it
Jenny:对
John:you take it and then you do something with it.So in this case what are we taking?
Jenny:哦，五角星，五角星
John:right,so literally 5 corner star
Jenny:对的
John:so thats third,third,first tone
Jenny:是，五角星
John:alright,so if it's not five cornered star,if it's just another star you don't call it this,right?
Jenny:哦，对，我们就说“星星”
John:so we're gonna take this five corner star and we're gonna do what?
Jenny:放到树顶上。。把五角星放到树顶上
John:alright so we're gonna put it on top of the tree.So how do we say on top of the tree?
Jenny:树顶上，树顶上
John:alright so you didn't just say “树上”,you said "树顶上”
Jenny:对，因为“树上”的话可能是 anywhere on the tree
John:ahh,ok
Jenny:但是，“树顶上”就是最顶上 top of the tree
John:yeah,so a 顶 is like a high point
Jenny:嗯，对的
John:right like on a roof,it's like the highest part of the roof

John:yeah,like a peak,so on the tree it's just that..the top of the trunk..

John:so that's fourth tone and third tone.So on the very top of the tree is...

John:right,and what was the verb we used for this?
Jenny:放，放到树顶上
John:alright,now could we have said “放在树顶上”？
Jenny:哦，也可以的
John:ok,but this 到,it kinda emphasises that it's got a long way to go...maybe someone can't quite make it..
Jenny:哦
John:..so they need someone to cover the distance and put it all the way up there
Jenny:嗯，是的
John:so it's not wrong if you say 放在，it's just a slight difference in emphasis
Jenny:对。那我们，哦，几句话，再看一下，把五角星放到树顶上。。把五角星放到树顶上
John:alright so then ah John arrives and he helps out ,right?
Jenny:嗯,对，然后你还说“Connie 圣诞树装饰得很漂亮”。。it's a compliment
John:right,so 装饰 is the word,right?
Jenny:对,“装饰”。。这是第一声和第四声
John:right first tone, fourth tone,and this means "to decorate"
Jenny:对。。装饰。。装饰
John:right so you decorated the Christmas tree really prettily,really nicely
Jenny:嗯，这是圣诞树装饰得很漂亮。。装饰得很漂亮
John：alright and then Connie appreciates the compliment, right? What does she say?
Jenny:嗯，她说“我花了很多心思” 。。“我花了很多心思”
John:ok,so the phrase here is “花心思” ,right?
Jenny:嗯，是的。那“花心思”呢就是说“我放了很多想法”
John:right, so this use of 花 of course is not "flower",it's a verb that means "to spend"
Jenny:对
John:just like..
Jenny:花钱
John:ok,or maybe it's time..
Jenny:花时间
John:ok,so in this case what you're spending is..
Jenny:心思。。心思
John:and that means "thought"
Jenny:对
John:so the time to think about it
Jenny:嗯,是对，还有你的很多 creative ideas
John:ok
Jenny:这一些都是“心思”
John:ok,mental energy
Jenny:嗯，对
John:so she didn't just "花心思”，she..
Jenny:花了很多心思
John:ok
Jenny:那，是不是很辛苦呢？
John:呵呵
Jenny:。。所以我来了,呵呵
John:so Jenny arrives and tells them...
Jenny:哦，你们辛苦了。。你们辛苦了
John:so,ah,let's talk about this a little bit,um,you often hear this translated as "you have worked very hard"
Jenny:or "you must be tired"
John:or "you must be tired",but they're just decorating a tree,right,it's kinda fun right？
Jenny:对,这不是那种“很累”..physically punishing
John:yeah,it's kinda like a line you just use to say,ah,"nice work guys"
Jenny:对，这是很客气的一句话，嗯，你用她来acknowledge peoples work
John:yeah,like,ah "well done guys,you did it"
Jenny:哦，对，对
John:something like that
Jenny:嗯
John:it's not necessarily "it has been a day of arduous labour for you"
Jenny:呵呵，没有
John:ok
Jenny:你们辛苦了，所以，哦，这是不管是，这个manual labour.还是有些人比如在电脑前面工作；你都可以说“辛苦了”
John:Is it something you might say because you didn't help?
Jenny:对,呵呵
John:hehe

John：can it..hehe..Jenny just walks around dishin' out the booze,right?

John:ah,that's very nice of you

John:alright,so 怪 meaning weird,strange
Jenny:嗯，对
John:so that's important to remember in Chinese when your talking about a flavour,a taste,you don't say "it tastes",you don't use some verb,you just talk about the flavour
Jenny:对，我们说“味道真怪”或者“味道真好”
John:alright,so um,so why is the flavour weird..why does it taste funny?
Jenny:哦，因为就是我们中国没有的蛋酒。。蛋酒
John:ok,so literally "egg liquor"
Jenny:嗯，对
John:but we're talking about eggnog
Jenny:嗯，是的
John:right,so fouth tone,third tone
Jenny:对，“蛋酒”，那，这个“蛋酒”里面有鸡蛋，然后奶油，威士忌或者brandy,什么的，对吧？
John:ok,so 奶油，that's cream,right?
Jenny:嗯，对
John:so third tone,second tone
Jenny:奶油
John:and then the word for whiskey again?

John:alright so first tone and two fourth tones

John:alright,so 负责，that's fourth tone,second tone..it means to be responsible for,or to be in charge of

John:ah,this is a very common phrase you hear when you're talkin' about work
Jenny:对，这是我负责。。这个工作或者这个project
John:ok,but in this case we're talkin' about the party work
Jenny:嗯
John:just like Jenny 负责蛋酒
Jenny:呵呵，是的，那 Connie 负责装饰圣诞树，那 David 负责发礼物
John:ok
Jenny:发礼物
John:alright,so 礼物 would be present
Jenny:嗯，对
John:right,third tone,fourth tone；gift
Jenny:那，通常我们听到是“送礼物”，对吧？
John:yeah,so to give a present would be 送礼物，so why is this 发？
Jenny:嗯，因为David他没有买很多很多礼物送给大家；他只是发。。发给大家。。distribute
John:alright,so he's just passing them out

John:so 送 would not be appropriate here

John:ok,so probably the names are written on top of each one

John:and he's just handing them out

John:ah,and that would be the answer to the question I asked before the dialogue,right?

John:ok,so 神秘 means mysterious,right?
Jenny:对
John:second tone,fourth tone

John:now why can't we just translate it literally like 秘密的圣诞老人？
Jenny:哦，“秘密的圣诞老人”好像就是“别人不知道有一个圣诞老人”
John:ooh
Jenny:因为中文“秘密”就是说“别人都不知道的”
John:you take the secrets very seriously,hehe
Jenny:呵呵，是的，但是？"secret Santa"你们的意思,好像
John:like we know he's there but we're not sure who he is

John:so that would be "神秘”
Jenny:没错

John:ok,so anyway they get their presents and they wanna know what everybody got,right?

John:right,so 收到 is the verb you use for when you get a present,'n' you receive a present
Jenny:对，当你真真拿到了，是你的了
John:ok,so 收，first tone,right?
Jenny:对
John:and then 到 of course fourth tone
Jenny:嗯，那收到礼物以后“拆开看看”。。拆开看看、
John:right “拆开”..that's two first tones..it means to open up the present;to rip off the..the paper
Jenny:对，那通常拆开呢，就是说这个礼物是wrapped up
John:aha
Jenny:嗯，包装过的，然后你要把他拆开
John:right,so you're opening it
Jenny:嗯，拆礼物
John:and it's kinda messy,right?
Jenny:嗯，是的，有很多的纸，我们可以拿出recycle
John:so just on a quick side note,if you've been to China and you've ever been somewhere where some of the buildings are getting torn down you see this 拆 character
Jenny:哦，对
John:so that's why I always associate it with,ah..
Jenny:messiness
John:yeah,chaos and messiness...that means it's gonna be torn down
Jenny:对的,但是。。。
John:right,so same character
Jenny:嗯，但是我们今天没有messy building；我们有圣诞礼物。Connie 她收到了手套。。手套
John:alright,so that's gloves
Jenny:对,那非常心像啊,很graphic 。。“套”这是
John:like a case
Jenny:嗯
John:so a hand case
Jenny:对，呵呵，把你的手套起来
John:or a hand cover
Jenny:嗯
John:ok,so that's third tone,fourth tone
Jenny:对，那后来我跟Connie说“哦，这个是肯定是女孩儿送的”。。“肯定是女孩儿送的”；因为是粉红色的手套
John:yeah,definitely a girl that gave it
Jenny:对
John:so let's look at this little pattern here,this 是女孩儿送的
Jenny:嗯，那通常我们看到这个“是。。的”结构呢，这知道就是非常肯定的语气
John:right,and here we have 肯定 reminding us that that is the tone;very definite

I think yiwei is 一位, 位 being the measure word.

Thanks for your correction too.I've amended it in the doc.hehe,I thought Jenny was saying we still believe in 圣诞老人。Well I did watch again Polar Express just prior to this,所以，现在我再以为圣诞老人。
Ah,that reminds me,I meant to say that while the words highlighted in red are one's that are particularly worth double checking,of course there could be errors elsewhere so corrections much appreciated. :)
