For those of you not currently living in China, have you noticed any Spring Festival/New Year festivities in Chinese communities in your area? What kinds of things are going on? Are you planning anything for this year's Spring Festival?

hehe, all I can say catherine is why didn't I think of starting this thread? Now I'll have to nominate you for that best post of the fortnight prize.

Here there are all the usual celebrations in China town with lion dances, meals, kung fu displays and firecrackers.

I'm in China, so I guess I really can't say for sure, but my hometown, Grand Rapids, has a low Chinese population.  I'm sure most Grand Rapidians are oblivious to Chinese New Year.

I'm not expecting to see much CNY in Tampa. My wife might have to start a little Floridian Chinese New Year revolution... :P

Are they still digging open-pit phosphate rock mines in Tampa?

ok,what tiger related words do we have in Chinese?

I just looked up Tiger balm:

万金油

.. to 发现 no Tigers! What's the story here? Why is it called tiger balm in the first place? Does this mean tenthousand gold oil?..like it's so precious its oil that's worth ten thousand pieces of gold?

Nope, haven't noticed anything. There is apparently a Chinese community of some sorts here, but I've never seen them. They don't really do public things, it seems. There's a Chinese restaurant downtown, though, but I haven't been there for yonks. Can't afford to eat out now that I'm saving up for going to China! :)
