Dictionaries list 拆信 for opening a letter. The concept seems to be disassembling/dismantling/taking apart something that was previously put together. So I guess it applies to both tearing open envelopes and demolishing buildings.
Dictionaries give two meanings for 拆 : take apart something that was previously combined together

拆 seems rather violent for opening a letter/package doesn't it? Isn't that the same character they paint in a big red circle on the side of buldings before they are going to tear them down?
Cool idea, thanks for posting.

Bazza,
Be careful! A lot of the Barbie accessories have been recalled!
