September 17, 2007 at 6:45 AMLostinAsia... was it 抵脂奶? I can't recall either, but had similar experiences trying to ask for non-fat. I love the deal where I say it in Chinese and they spit it out in English much better than my Chinese.

September 15, 2007 at 4:21 AMOh, and doesn't the pinyin spelling make Obamanation sound and look even more like "abomination." You'd think his advisors would have steered away from that possible distortion of the phrase/meaning.

September 15, 2007 at 4:16 AMTaiPan, I didn't see a response to your "Obamanation" offering so I'll take a stab. I haven't heard anything used, and haven't confirmed with a native speaker, but I'd take a stab at 奥巴马族 Aobamazu (min2zu2 de zu2, 民族的族). Zu2 族 is tribe, ethnic group, clan, race, family but in some internet circles is slang for an idea similar to the "Raider Nation" or "Obama-Nation" idea. I've never seen guo2 国 used in this kind of abstract. For example e族 is sometimes used for an online community. 越野e族 (www.fblife.com) is an example.

September 21, 2007 at 5:47 AMGreat lesson guys! John, I thought the speed was good, its fun to try and keep up some times to challenge our listening. Have you guys ever done any 'speed drills' or 'rapid fire' lessons? In a previous class the teacher used to give us a series of sentances that were not stretching the vocab but were very fast, it was a fun challenge. Anyway, good fun lesson, THANKS for all the hard work.
