Help with a conditional statement

I just wrote this sentence:

如果政府处死了他的话，一个无辜的人死掉。

What I wanted to say is this:

"If the government had executed him, an innocent man would have died"

I had no idea how to handle the past tense or how to indicate 'would'.  Anybody got any ideas?
