光光灯 The bling bling on my fan

October 26, 2007, 04:26 PM posted in General DiscussionToday, was one of those days where I really didn't "get" China.
This day has ended with me now noticing, my fan has some bling bling.
What do I mean? Well, I have this cool remote control fan, the kind that circulates air around. I have a little remote control for it. On the remote, it has a button for 彩灯 cai deng. I have no idea what 'cai' means, I just guessed the sound of that character, and just typed it here, hey and I got it right!, but anyway, this button makes a light on my fan blink, it's got a cover of about two inches in diameter. The light starts out red, then turns to blue/purple, then it starts to blink. Then it fades back to red, and then starts all over again.
Huh? Does this serve any purpose? Is it for me to send out a distress signal if I am in bed and can't get up? Is it to placate kids? Is it just for fun?! Anybody know?
我的风向有一个灯,叫彩灯。这个灯有什么用?我真想不出来。。! ;)
I bet YOU don't have a remote control for bling bling.

October 27, 2007, 04:36 AMI think 彩 means colorful. I've run into it in phrases decribing verigated objects (peacock tails, abalone shells...) that I'm not remembering too well at the moment. But its about 50F in California, now.

October 27, 2007, 04:48 AMHi Mark, Can you run into Target or Long's or somewhere and see if the fans in California now have blinking disco lights! Kyle, -3 ...I don't think my 冰箱 is that cold.

October 27, 2007, 06:02 AMI was wondering where you've been lately LanTian. Guess I now know, hallucinating with the help of your fan:) Does the fan have a heater function too? Or, is this the type of fan one might find in one of those massage parlors Amber has been talking about? 按按摩摩

October 27, 2007, 09:30 AMBling bling on fans reminds me of Clay at Cpods new cellphone. When you wave it quickly, it releases a weird chime. We were trying to figure out what on earth that feature could be for?? Like, if you drop your phone you might hear the bling of the chime?? Weird. I think it comes down to this: in China, its all about the bells and whistles (and blinking coloured lights).

October 27, 2007, 11:14 AMHa, -3 isn't too bad. Today is actually quite warm. We're actually having a long autumn this year. This time last year it was already snowing. We have a good couple months in -20s, and a few weeks that hover around -40. 冰箱! 哈! 我们不需要个臭冰箱!

October 26, 2007, 04:57 PMCool. 蓝天, 我很羡慕你。 On the other hand at 6 degrees celsius it would be hard to construct an excuse to buy a blinking fan even if it were available in Germany. ;)
