Exporting Vocabulary to Anki

September 21, 2010, 04:05 PM posted in General DiscussionChinese Pod has an export-to-Anki feature, but so far I have not been successful at using it; Anki doesn't recognize the exported file.
Anki is a flash-card program that I'd like to use because it selects cards to show in accordance with how well you've done with those particular cards in the past. (I've done my own Word- (and VBA-) based program that does that for individual characters, but it's not DBMS-based and therefore requires too much repetitive data entry. By using Anki I had hoped to avoid the effort of learning enough database programming to present Chinese characters and tone-marked pinyin in dialog boxes.)
Has anyone had sucess with exporting to Anki? How did you get it to work?

You haven't described the process that you're following causing the fail, so I'll just give a quick outline of what I'm doing. Forgive me if this is exactly the process you're doing that isn't working for you.
I have a deck already set up in Anki, it has a model with fields defined and all. I open the existing deck, then file/ import. I then have to point to the file that cPod exported, confirm the field matches, and it's in. Takes just a few seconds per imported file.
Do not try to just open the cPod exported file directly. You do have to create a deck first and then import the cards to that. Your deck model should have at least three fields: one for the English, one for the hanzi, and one for the Pinyin. These are the fields in the cPod export file.
The only complaint I have about the Anki export is that it automatically creates a recognition record for all the words, then creates recall records for all the words at the end. So if I were to make the mistake of importing a large file all at once, I would spend several weeks doing recognition before being forced to do recall! So I make sure I export in 10 word chunks, which makes for 20 cards per imported file. This is my daily "new card" load in Anki. It just requires me to be pretty painstaking with my cPod exports.
