How to talk attendance?

I have an electronic attendance system at my school. I want to know how to say a few sentences.

1) I need to take attendance. (It probably starts out 我要登记...)

2) So-and-so is present (Is there something more formal than 他在?)

3) So-and-so is absent (Is there something more formal than 他不在?)

Note: I have looked these up before in the nciku dictionary. I have never been satisfied that the answers given are suitable for school-speak.

Hmmm... maybe I can answer 2 and 3 myself.

2) present 在场

3) absent 缺席

I don't know why, but I have much more confidence in 3 than 2.

Still no clue on number 1, which was the main one.

我要点了名。 (I want to take the roll.)

Why do you want to be so formal?

我要登记.. you might use in the context of the Census but it refers to yourself - you want to register. It doesn't sound right to me for talking to the class about taking a roll. The roll is 点名册.

I mark them 1 present and 0 absent. The Chinese teachers I was told just use a tick system - I want something more precise because it is a tool for learning everyone's name.

I don't want to be formal. Sometimes our computer system is broken, and so I need to tell staff the problem in a direct, clear way. 登记 should be ok as some Taiwanese students told me to use it, but they couldn't agree how! Hence this post.

XX和XX在。/ XX和XX到了。

XX和XX不在。/ XX和XX没到。

I meant to say before that I do seem to remember a conversation about this, but I just looked a bit and couldn't find it. Perhaps it is all in our heads.
