Praying mantis

October 11, 2008, 02:02 PM posted in General DiscussionAs a lot of styles such as praying mantis were said to have developed following the observation of fighting styles in nature I thought it might be interesting to observe that.This is the best I could find on a quick search of praying mantis.Not as good as I would have liked,but it's a start.I would have liked to see 2 mantis fight.I think there was a scene of this in Enter the Dragon if I'm not mistaken [when he was on the boat going across to the island].

In the mantis move, the fingers are almost closed together.

I have never actually heard the magnificent Mandarin mantis word before and should have looked it up ,but you have come to the rescue once again so thanks.From what I've seen ,these mantis will take on critters much larger without fear.Interesting that your dog likes to play with a mantis.How do they get along?

For the animal clips...I didn´t find it on youtube, but there was an interesting part of a show with chris crudelli where a guy was able to use his Ki (japanese definition of Qi...even so the idea of how it works differs a bit), so that his shouting was so powerfull, that he could kill small birds with it...

November 20, 2008, 09:31 AMSpeaking of mantis fights, what's the difference between 螳螂偷桃 (Mantis Steals Peach) and 猴子偷桃 (Monkey Steals Peach) ? For me it looks like the same move.

Good question.As far as I can tell ,Monkey steals the peach [or white ape steals the peach ] was the original name for the form which existed in mantis style kung fu.Over the years so many new schools arise and sometimes they will modify the forms slightly or sometimes just change the name a degree.I've read when the style moved south the peaches there were smaller [or at least perceived a so ] and thus didn't require the greater strength of the monkey and thus was renamed to mantis steals the peach [while the form remained the same].
