当选总统奥巴马：变革的时代到来了

巴拉克・奥巴马当选美国首位黑人总统。奥巴马在芝加哥一个大公园向数万民众发表讲话说：“美国变革的时代到来了”。47岁的奥巴马即将是美国第44位总统。他的当选，被看作是历史转折，不仅为美国带来一个新的梦想，也为世界带来希望。
据媒体暂时的统计，奥巴马获得了333个大选举人票，远远超过当选所需的270张。奥巴马对竞选对手麦凯恩的竞选活动致以敬意，并呼吁全美国人民团结起来。他说，经过了很长时间，但是今天，由于我们的努力，美国变革的时代到来了。
他说，如果还有人怀疑，美国是一个一切都可能成真的地方，如果他对我们父辈开拓者的美国梦和我们民主制度的力量还有怀疑的话，那么今天就是对他的回答。
奥巴马的竞选对手，共和党候选人麦凯恩已经承认奥巴马的胜利，并向他表示祝贺。美国总统布什也向奥巴马发去祝贺。但令人遗憾的是，奥巴马的外祖母上周去世，这位养育了首位美国黑人总统的白人老太太，未能看到外孙的胜利。
法国政界和朝野舆论一致对奥巴马当选美国总统表示欢迎和庆幸。
法国总统萨科齐祝贺奥巴马取得“杰出的胜利”，并表示，奥巴马的当选也给法国带来希望。

November 06, 2008, 11:04 PMJust to keep learners off balance, I noticed that, when discussing the transition team, an article in today's 世界日报 called Obama, 欧巴玛, not 奥巴马. It seems that Taiwan is determined to use different transliterations for U.S. presidents ala 布什versus 布希. However, while the two Bush transliterations were both pretty close (i.e. bad), I think that the 欧/Oū of the Taiwan version more closely matches the sound of Obama's initial syllable.
As consolation, considering his two year race, I think the mainland 马 beats the Taiwan 玛 by a head. Incidentally, Nicku only recognizes the mainland transliteration.

The problem is that "欧“ primarily means "Europe", not "America", in Chinese, and furthermore, there is actually the family name "欧" in China, although it's not a major one. On the otherhand, "奥" is a character often used for transliteration. It's important for foreign names to sound "foreign" to local people.

I've found that there are some foreign names that use the "欧" character. Ironically, 欧亨利 is an American author, hehe. Anyway, it seems that 欧巴玛 might be a better transliteration than I thought. I still prefer 奥巴马, though. For the record, OPEC is 欧佩克 in Chinese.

November 07, 2008, 04:24 AMI did some search and found out that the term, African-American, is 非(洲)裔美国人. I think it is more common to use it without 洲. However, I couldn't find the word for president-elect. Does anyone know how to translate this into Chinese?

November 07, 2008, 05:30 AMhwangd01 , if you'd read the vocab annotations in the article above, you would have noticed 当选总统 (dāngxuǎn zǒngtǒng) president-elect.
on the subject of transliteration, I'm really wondering how this works, are the rules so clear (albeit different in 台湾 and 大陆) as to ensure consistency, does every one follow the usage from whomever happens to transliterate first, or is there a de-facto official body such as 人民日报 that defines the standard?

Of course, a lot of people there have been enthusiastically rooted for Barakc Obama, even though they are not eligible to vote in the US, hehe. Anyway, Japanese people are, at least, somewhat familiar with Mr. Obama by default.

On the other hand, the name “McCain” doesn’t sound so good to Japanese people’ s ears. The Japanese transcription of “McCain” is “ma-ke-i-n” (マケイン), and the sound is almost the same as “ma-ke-i-nu” (負け犬), which unfortunately means “underdog” in Japanese.....alas!
In this sense, I must say that Mr. McCain was destined to lose (输定) the Presidential election long ago from the standpoint of Japanese people. No offense please, Mr. McCain. Japan has a proud tradition of respecting a good loser.
To my knowledge, there were a few bad losers in Democrats in the past.
