The very original meaning of "巨" was "矩" (ju3, a carpenter's ruler = 尺, chi3). There are only "right angles" in this character, which makes it a good ruler!

I have added 'hard iron' and 'hook', resp. 硬铁 (yìngtiě) and 钩子 (gōuzi) under 钜 as suggested by changye. 

However, the reason I didn't initially include those meanings is I couldn't find any 钜 compound with corresponding meanings.

And that is really the way I go about those phonetic characters, trying to find multi-character words to illustrate the definitions.  Personaly, I hardly ever learn characters in isolation.
