Do foreigners care about the Expo?

May 01, 2010, 12:55 AM posted in General DiscussionThis question is serious. I checked out msnbc.com and news.bbc.co.uk today. There was some mention of the Expo's opening ceremony, but it was a tad muted. Perhaps it is just because I live in Shanghai and have been bombarded by the Expo since forever, but I'm surprised at the lack of foreign media attention. It kind of feels like China is in a room screaming, "China is back!" but not many people are in the room listening.
I suppose it is a bit early to tell what the international reaction will be...

Apparently the fireworks were made in Australia as well as the ceremony being produced and directed by Aussie David Atkins.Also China is Australia's largest trading partner.Even so,despite these factors I still feel the opening ceremony to such a large and expensive world event in a country that has stepped onto the world stage would have been televised here anyway.

May 01, 2010, 08:57 AMGuess what?After the close of this Shanghai EXPO,all the pavillons expect China Pavillon will be removed.What will the government do then??The answer is to construct buildings just where the foreign pavillons used to stand....Another GDP programme....

But it will guarantee this year china's GDP growth will be another double-digit!!!

May 01, 2010, 02:07 AMI looked up the list of previous Expos. Being Australian, I was aware of the 1988 Expo in Brisbane. I was also aware of the 1992 Expo in Seville, because of the connection with the Barcelona Olympics. I don't recall knowing about any of the Expos between then and now. Even the most recent in 2008 in Zaragoza Spain doesn't ring a bell for me. I don't think I would have known of Shanghai Expo without CPod.
So, no, I don't think anyone outside China really cares.

May 01, 2010, 12:28 PMIn Shanghai, the Expo and its blue-tooth mascot Haibao were omnipresent. Back in Switzerland, I did see it mentioned here and there in the newspapers, but never prominently. Most people here don't know about the Expo in Shanghai (whereas the Olympics in Beijing 2008 seemed to get much more coverage).

Yeah, with regard to publicity, EXPO is absolutely no match for the Olympics. After all, there is no "medal" in EXPO.

May 01, 2010, 10:48 AMThis whole EXPO thing is really 無聊, a big part of it is only propaganda. If every building in Shanghai or in the whole US would have solar panels on its roof and every car consumes only 3 L gas/100 K - that would be something noticable, but the EXPO...
