The differences in some character pronunciations is accentual difference, much like the difference between many native English accents, and in particular the difference between British and American English, or the Oxford and Webster English dictionaries. It's still English, and it's still Mandarin. Regards Media lessons maybe you should listen to the radio instead, like I'm doing now. News98(Taiwan) is great, a lot of discussion on many subjects including current affairs, history, health, politics, music, art, poetry etc.

It would be in the best interests of students to familiarise themselves with both the "common language' of the PRC, and the 'national language' of the ROC, both of which claim to be standard Mandarin, whatever that is. Besides, Mandarin speakers on both sides of the strait will understand what you are saying regardless of different tone pronunciations of certain characters. In addition, Mandarin accents vary as much as English accents do. I prefer the southern accent, but I'm biased.

February 8, 2015 at 4:07 AM腰酸背痛 is to ache all over after hard work or exercise. 精疲力盡 is to feel utterly exhausted or tired, as does 疲憊. 酸, which is more commonly used in China as opposed to 痠 also refers to a sad（perhaps sour） feeling after a relationship breakup 心酸.
疼 apart from meaning being hurt or feeling sore also means to love dearly. 我心疼你。。My heart aches for you.
There is also an often used saying that expresses parents love for their children that uses the word 疼 but I can't recall it. Perhaps someone else can
