Have a look at the analysis below. Looks like ultimate/penultimate usage of the word is a bit controversial in Chinese as well. BUT even if we accept this already established (questionable as it might be) use of 压轴 as "finale" or "climax" or "pièce de désistance"... the word clearly cannot be used in the sense of 倒数第二 (perhaps only in 京剧术语). And so my point - "penultimate" should be removed from this lesson's definition of 压轴.

"压轴,原来是京剧术语。京剧把第一出戏叫做“开锣戏”;第二出叫“早轴”;第三出叫“中轴”;第四出就叫“压轴”;最后一出叫“大轴”。压轴戏是倒数第二出,现在误用倒数第二的“压轴”来称呼倒数第一,不过是约定俗成罢了。 压轴--指一场折子戏演出的倒数第二个剧目。 由于紧压大轴而得名。 演压轴戏一般都是戏班挂头牌的主要演员。 据上海辞书出版社出版的《辞海》(缩印本·1989年版)称:“压轴是戏曲术语。指一台折子戏演出中的倒数第二个剧目。由于最末一个剧目称大轴而得名。”例如,京剧一场戏如果有五出的话,第一出叫作“开锣戏”,第二出名曰“早轴”,第三出称为“中轴”,第四出(倒数第二)则为“压轴”,第五出(最后一出)称作“大轴”。由此可见,“压轴”与“最后”不是一回事。如今一些报纸杂志误用倒数第二的“压轴”来称倒数第一(最后),显然是不对的。因此,希望作者(记者)和编者都应不断学习,增长知识,讲究词语,不要再以讹传讹了。若无把握,不妨查查案头的《辞海》等工具书,以防常识性谬误。"

Thanks for sharing your findings. Now when you say the original definition of 压轴 was "the penultimate act in a play". What do you mean by "penultimate"? Final? Ultimate? Or what the word penultimate actually means - item/event preceding the last one?

压轴 is given translation as "climatic act; penultimate act", but all examples and other translations of the word refer only to 'climatic act' or 'finale'. Penultimate is second to the last - not the last and shouldn't serve as its synonym.
