February 11, 2009 at 5:35 AMI have a basic question. When the lady said "zheyang" it sounded to me like she said "zheyanr." Is that a dialect or regional accent?

February 6, 2009 at 5:44 AMMy wife and I both grew up near Gilroy and have spent decades living in the San Francisco Bay area. A wonderful place to be exposed to diverse languages and cultures -- and foods! That is where I first took an interest in learning Mandarin and Spanish. I now teach English at a local college and would like to take classes in 普通话。
Back in the 1980s our youth group was ordering dinner at a Chinese restaurant in Venezuela. All the menus were in Chinese. We would speak to the interpreter in English about what kinds of dishes we would have ordered in the States, and then he would speak to the server in Spanish, who would then write in Chinese what the cook should prepare for us. It was an interesting surprise when we got our meals, but I'm sure it was good!

January 10, 2009 at 3:05 AMHey, Guys...
I wonder what JP means by "see you in the Northwest"? If you both happen to come to the Portland area, I'd like to meet you for lunch.
Every Qing Wen and Dear Amber show that I've heard has been inspiring and entertaining. Thanks for all you've done. I will miss Amber's cute Canadian accent.

August 26, 2008 at 3:20 PMPlease explain what people mean when they say, "I see Chinese is very difficult for you." From what I could see, the American speaking Chinese in this dialog was doing well.
