这么多年了，我何尝离开过。。was translated verbally as, "after all these years, when did I leave?" I am having trouble understanding this. "after so many years, (oh) how could I leave?" would make more sense to me...can you clarify a little more? What function does the ”过“ serve here? Can it be left out,and if so, how would the sentence meaning change? Thank you.
