you actually have made a point and a damn good one. the dirty secret is that there is no such thing as "proper english". what we all speak is a worn-down, slapped together hodge-podge of mis-matched parts of several ancient languages. viewed logically our language makes little sense. that's why english is the hardest language to learn. so next time someone give you the can i/may i line, tell them" no, you may'nt".
