I like Shanghai, but it is simply too crowded (like any modern metropolis) for me to enjoy.

However, I do recommend people to go to the towns and villages outside Shanghai for a ncier less touristy experience.

I had been to the canal town (or shall we say village?) of Tong Li (同里) which I absolutely loved! 3 hours from Shanghai by bus. It was completely untouristy, yet had all the required facilities, traditional tea houses, gondolas, people rarely spoke English, yet, it was easy to get around. The gardens were beautiful and I simply enjoyed walking along the canals at sunrise and the gardens (rarely saw a non- Chinese tourist)

The inn I stayed in had furniture dating back to the 1920s (It was an old large house converted into a pension which made me feel like I was staying in someones house rather than a hotel)

Looking forward to exploring my next destination in China, armed now with a few words of Mandarin ...

Actually, I end up missing the underground trains too. And I am not in Shanghai, but in London! The tube is so packed at rush hour at London Bridge that one HAS to miss one or two trains to get a bit of "foot space" into the train! It is a daily routine.

But yes, people rarely push in London - at least not the way people push in China (and many other parts of South Asia). I think it is habitual. Of course, there is a HUGE difference in populations, with the population of SHanghai much much larger than that of London or any otehr city in Europe or USA!
