February 6, 2009 at 3:34 PMHas anyone ever come across (or do the members of this discussion care to try to make together) a diagram of the Chinese family tree that identifies the correct word for maternal and paternal 1st/2nd generation ancestors and 1st/2nd generation descendants?
It seems to me that Chinese people are not even sure of all the different names. A cheat sheet in Hanzi, Pinyin and English translation would be priceless.

August 23, 2010 at 12:51 AMYom Kippur is the sin-forgiveness-requesting holiday, but the two come as block of observance known as "the high holidays." "Reflection and repentance for mistakes of the year" is probably a better description than "Request for forgiveness of sins." Rosh Hashana comes after Yom Kippur and is a celebratory holiday.
