Yom Kippur is the sin-forgiveness-requesting holiday, but the two come as block of observance known as "the high holidays." "Reflection and repentance for mistakes of the year" is probably a better description than "Request for forgiveness of sins." Rosh Hashana comes after Yom Kippur and is a celebratory holiday.

Has anyone ever come across (or do the members of this discussion care to try to make together) a diagram of the Chinese family tree that identifies the correct word for maternal and paternal 1st/2nd generation ancestors and 1st/2nd generation descendants?

It seems to me that Chinese people are not even sure of all the different names.  A cheat sheet in Hanzi, Pinyin and English translation would be priceless.

Great lesson! reminds me of the lesson about fighting over a parking space with my all time favorite Chinese Pod gem: "Guan Ni de Pi Shi!"
