Saying thank you can sometimes (unfortunately) be an insipid action because we do it so often and without thought. But I want to say a sincere thank you to changye for posting that, and for choosing the quotes he did.

(I have just finished reading an article in the Guardian relating to persecution of a certain forbidden religious group. I will not name them and dare not link to the article, but the quotes above seem painfully relevant in light of the words I read.)

Hmm... concrete vs. abstract. It's an interesting opposition. I can't say I understand it altogether myself changye! ;-) Perhaps 真利江 can (succinctly!) explain it for us.

抽象 is a useful word for the classroom I feel, time and again the word 'abstract' has cropped up in passages students are required to read. Occasionally a single Chinese term by way of explanation can smooth the path to understanding.

Hi mandarinkoala (quite a handle!), don't go hurting our sweet jenny's feelings now!   The only alteration I made to her face was color balance to (try to!) match the painting's hue. jenny is already a bonny lass, but of course my wife (also Chinese) is the prettiest of all!

@jenny, 谢谢你啊,那是很有意思,而且肯定有用。基本上我不怎么喜欢毕加索的画儿,我更喜欢文艺复兴的艺术,比如波提且利,弗朗西斯卡,等等。你觉得还有可能出现像李奥纳多,米开朗基罗……这样的人物吗?

@changye -

I'm glad to see that we're getting over taking this too seriously! Onward and upward!

The early bird may catch the worm, but it's the early worm that gets caught! (早起的鸟儿有虫子吃,但是早起的虫子被鸟儿吃了!)

My little son wakes me at 6.00am every day, but at almost 9.00 I just want to go back to sleep..

...sorry, I'm drivelling... (in the wrong place!!) time for a strong cup of tea and listen to this no doubt excellent lesson!

An interesting and perhaps less common word Jenny uses in the podcast is 抽象 (chōuxiàng). She and John discuss the phrase 交给 and Jenny explains: 但是这里的交给呢是比较抽象的。

The word can be translated as 'abstract'. Here are 2 more examples of its use.

这个概念太抽象了。 -  This concept is too abstract.

这么抽象的道理,有多少人听的懂?  - How many people understand such abstract concepts?

Yea though I walk through the valley of the shadow of drivel, I will fear no evil, for I will drivel in such a way that those who see me will marvel and say truly there goes a dude who knows where his towel is. Kapla!
