Yes, the pirate thing is international, I think. And it's not (yet) a public holiday over here...

We have Talk Like A Pirate day in the UK; but we don't have a Children's Day. Which suggests that we may need to rethink our priorities.

Don't say it too loud, but I like the Japanese version. Hey, I was an 80's kid in Britain: who didn't like the Japanese version?

Damon Albarn's take on it is good too - although I missed it live.

It is indeed the CCTV series in the picture.

I've actually got two copies of the DVD box set of this (bought one in Beijing last year, then a friend - knowing I'm a fan - gave me the very same box set), so if any CPod users in the UK want a free 西遊記 box set, I can stick it in the post for them. Drop me a line.

If anybody can give me the courage to ascend to the dizzy heights of an advanced lesson, it's Sun Wukong. Looking forward it!

Thanks, Jenny. I should probably have clarified, for people who don't share the UK's oddball system of talking about weight (ounces, pounds, stones...), that I was talking about weight and not currency. As to why we have such a bizarre system, I blame our (+/-) 2000 years of history.

A jin is a Chinese pound (in older English sources often talked about as a "catty" - see the wikipedia article here - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Catty ). According to the all-knowing Wikipedia, a 斤 in Hong Kong is not the same as a 斤 in mainland China, as it's been formalised in the mainland to fit with the metric system. And neither are the same as either a) gin or b) djinns.

Actually there are quite a few native speakers I know over here, so it's not too difficult. I have a weekly meetup with a Chinese friend, and am also doing a bit of speaking online. Good luck with turning over those rocks.

Although my non-Chinese girlfriend may not be forgiving of me exchanging her simply for language-learning reasons...
