大家好！

I have a question regarding the meaning of "认识“. I remember in Chinese class our 老师 said only to use "认识“ when refering to a person, and on this lesson's vocab list that emphasis was mentioned. But in one of the vocab expansion examples I see the following:

"你认识这个字吗？“

So can 认识 be used to express "knowing" things other than people?
