May 06, 2008, 11:07 AMHi liayi, as a French expatriate, going home to the mother country is always an interesting experience. I have been amazed at the number of French people who will automatically speak to me in English - before I have a chance to open my mouth, and them compliment me on how well I speak French for a foreigner. Some French people can be quite abrupt, but I find this mostly in the larger cities, where everyone is in a hurry, and a gawking tourist just gets in the way.

May 05, 2008, 11:40 AMOk - a general knowledge question. I must confess that Chinese public toilets hold a kind of Freudian fascination to me..... I have often seen a kind of rusty pair of forceps as part of the cleaners arsenal in public loos. I can imagine what the things are used for, but does anyone know their name ?

May 07, 2008, 10:57 AMHello Amber, A times like these, i realise how much I have yet to learn. Babelfish translated the words as "the chamberpot pulls out the child" By the way, how do you produce Pinyin characters on this screen ? I can do Chinese simplified, but not pinyin......
