Chinehao,

I can totally relate to your story. I was born in the Philippines but am of Chinese ancestry. My dad was born in Hong Kong, but my mom was born in Manila already. Both of my parents (and hence, I) trace our roots to Fujian province in China.

Growing up in Manila as a kid, I quickly realized that I looked different from some of my classmates who were Filipinos, just by the complexion. It was kinda hard to cope as well growing up in that environment, because we would learn English and Filipino at school, then at home we would speak 闽南话. When asked, I always refered to myself as Chinese-Filipino, never really dropping the "Chinese" part.

Eight years ago I immigrated to work in the United States, so I guess now I am a Chinese-Filipino-American, even though I still have Filipino citizenship but am already residing in the US permanently.

Eventhough I love living in America, I still hold Asia close to my heart, and which is why I am putting a lot of effort into learning more about Chinese language and culture. Thanks to ChinesePod I am realizing this dream at a pretty fast pace!

So going back to your point, I think I have just (unconsciously) gone the path of adaptation rather than assimilation.

Thank You! :)
