Awesome .. but as far as i know that 的 can be dropped from some sentences like 你朋友 .. but when exactly should i drop it, and when i should't !?

hi.. thanks for the excellent lesson and your friendly way in talking ..so based on what i understood from the lesson: 想 means want and 想要 also means want but in more polite way.. am i getting it right or still missing something !?
